Commemorating Black History: The Black Loyalists
Honour a foundational chapter of Canadian history with this 1 oz 99.99% pure silver coin. As the inaugural release in the Commemorating Black History series, this piece pays tribute to the approximately 3,500 Black Loyalists who settled in British North America following the American War of Independence. Their legacy of perseverance helped shape the character of communities across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Heraldic Symbolism and Heritage
Designed by Darrel E. Kennedy, Assiniboine Herald, the reverse features the armorial bearings of the Black Loyalist Heritage Society. The shield displays three Loyalist civil coronets representing those who fled to the North, alongside a ship's wheel that symbolizes both the historic landings of 1783 and the ongoing development of the community. The Society’s motto, "The heart of your knowledge is in your roots," is elegantly inscribed on the reverse.
A Legacy of Courage
This $20 face value coin features a repeating maple leaf field pattern on the obverse alongside the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Struck in a brilliant proof finish, this limited mintage issue serves as a high-authority tribute to the courage of the Black Loyalists who established settlements like Birchtown—once the largest free Black settlement outside of Africa. Each coin arrives in a premium Royal Canadian Mint clamshell with a serialized certificate of authenticity.
